The 10 Dress Up Hats For Kids That All Dress Up Collections Should Have

Dress Up HatsThere’s just something about a little child with a fun hat on his or her head that makes you smile.  Children LOVE putting hats on their heads, changing their identity in a split second. It’s easy, it’s quick, and it feels great!

No dress up box and accessories collection should be without a bunch of awesome dress up hats for kids. Grown up sized hats are good, but kid-sized will get you a whole lot more play-time.

Here are 10 fantastic dress up hats for kids that your little girl or guy will love!

Fire Chief Hat

This is likely one of the most popular dress up hats for little kids. Boys and girls alike love the shiny red symbol of daring rescue, bravery, and fun. I’d be surprised to find a child who hasn’t been fascinated with fire-fighters, fire-trucks, and that shiny hat at some point or another! (My own 3 year old girl regularly accessorizes her favorite princess outfit with her brother’s fire chief hat… it’s a classic.).  See fire chief hats at Amazon.com

Magician Hat

Magician's HatKids LOVE magic. Surprises, secrets, things they can’t figure out… they love it all. Top off the fun with a fancy black top hat (and a cape and some white gloves) and let the role play fun begin!  Be prepared though that you’ll need to act surprised and amazed EACH time a trick is performed… so if repeat pretending isn’t your thing… this may not be the hat for your little one. 😉  But then again, many adults love magic too!  See magician hats at Amazon.com

Cowboy or Cowgirl Hat

There’s something very classic about a cowboy or cowgirl hat that is a lot of fun for a child to wear. It can be dressy or casual, pretty or manly… you can accessorize with a bandana or scarf, cowboy boots, or a lasso if you dare. But either way, definitely work with them on some good ole’ Cowboy twang and the iconic swagger. So much fun! See cowboy hats at Amazon.com

Santa Hat

Ho ho ho! Kids love everything to do with Santa! Dressing up like jolly old St. Nick is a fun activity for kids, especially as Christmas approaches. Acting out Santa Claus (or Mrs. Claus) is a fantastic way to teach about the beauty and FUN of giving! Use a spare pillow case as a sack for “presents”, and you’re good to go!  See Santa Hats at Amazon.com

Construction Hard HatConstruction Hard Hat

Many little boys (and girls) adore all things to do with construction sites. Toy tractors, digging in sandboxes, reading picture books about construction sites and real equipment – there’s quite an appeal to this whole “world”.  If your little one likes this sort of thing, adding an iconic yellow construction hard hat to the dress up box is a must!  See Construction Hard Hats at Amazon.com

Crown or Tiara

There’s something instantly appealing about a glittery crown or sparkling tiara. It might be the “I’m special” feeling a child gets when that crown or tiara is on his or her head. It might be the shine and the jewels that make it so attractive. And they pretty much ARE the perfect accessory for a little girl who loves all things PrincessSee crowns and tiaras at Amazon.com

Animal HatMonkey Hat

There are so many different animal hats that are much loved by all kids. From scary tiger to fuzzy bear, from floppy bunny ears to crazy shark head, the options are endless. If your little guy or girl has a favorite animal, chances are there are awesome animal/bird/fish/reptile hats available that will make his or her day!  See animal hats at Amazon.com

Police Captain HatPolice Captain Hat

Toddlers love to be in charge. They love to direct others in play, and ensure all is well and safe in their little world.  A realistic police captain’s hat is a perfect choice of a dress up hat for these very reasons!  If you have more than one child, it might be a good idea to have both a fire chief and a police chief hat though… advice given from experience. 😉  Let BOTH kids have a hat that makes them feel important, and you’ll have a more peaceful play zone.  See police captain hats at Amazon.com

Clown Hat or Silly HatClown Hat

Kids love to look silly. They love to be laughed at BECAUSE they made themselves look funny.  They even love to laugh at themselves when they look in the mirror wearing a clown hat or silly hat!  There are many different types of silly hats or clown hats – pick up a few for your dress up box and I’d almost guarantee that those hats will be layered up, worn backwards on purpose, or worn in a creative way… which is what, as a parent, you encourage, right? 🙂   See clown hats at Amazon.com

Chef’s HatChef's Hat

Many children have a play kitchen somewhere, or a tea-set or some play food at the very least. Encourage role-playing and creative cooking play by adding a fantastic chef’s hat to your child’s collection! One of the activities my daughter loves is to pretend she’s a chef at a fancy restaurant – she’ll set the table, make a fabulous meal (even better if I let her use my pans or Tupperware), and serve me and her dad a great “dinner”. A chef’s hat makes it all the more “real” for her!  See chef hats at Amazon.com

Thanks Norman! I don’t think you’re alone in wanting to “dress to impress” even as an adult now – there’s a HUGE market for adult dressy and adult dress-up clothes too… just think of the craze around Halloween!

Great suggestions! I always LOVED my fire hat and my santa hat when I was younger. I can still remember running around with them. One hat I gave my nephew that he loves is a Daniel Boone hat, or just a fur hat with a tail. He absolutely loves to pretend he’s a great hunter or Native American with it. They’re really soft, too!

Oh man, I LOVE that idea!! There’s just no end to the fun you can have with dress up hats! I think I’ll need to “hunt” one of those down for my next page of awesome hats! Thanks for the reminder of yet another great dress up hat, game, and character!

These are so cute! My favorite has got to be the magician hat, I used to love magic when I was a kid and I think kid-me would have thought getting a magic hat would have been the best thing ever. I love the little rabbit attached to it in the photo, lol! The police captain hat would have been a good second choice. Nice choices!

    • Marlaine September 19, 2016 at 5:33 pm

Thanks Chiqui! I love that magician’s hat too – there’s just something about a good trick that appeals to all ages, isn’t there!? Glad you enjoyed the page, and thanks for chiming in! Have a fantastic day! 🙂

I vote for clown hat! 🙂 The rest of the hats are actually situation-based meaning like the Santa Hat, most probably my kids will only wear it in December. The rest of the months, they’re not going to put it on. The Magic Hat is okay since you don’t have to wait for Christmas to wear it but it’s not perfect for most occasions. I love the Chef Hat. It can be worn regularly but it’s white – the stains will be difficult to be washed. The Monkey Hat is also nice since it can be worn on any occasion. But Clown Hat is the best. No matter what the occasion is my kids can just wear it. I hate to be buying so many hats which ended up hanging on the door or lost somewhere. So the Clown Hat is just perfect for my kids! 🙂

Thanks Snow White! The clown hat is a fun one for sure! In my house, a Safari Hat and a Fire Chief hat are worn pretty much all the time… with a Construction hat taking its turn regularly too. Oddly enough, worn with Princess dresses or Tiger costumes LOL. Dress up is such fun, isn’t it?

You are so right! Children just love putting things on their heads and transforming into different personalities. I definitely think that the ones you highlighted are the most popular. I know of a little girl and boy, especially, who love to dress up. So I think the girl will like the tiara but the boy would most definitely love the chef hat. You’ve provided great choices and I think they’d love these hats for Christmas. Something to consider I guess.

    • Marlaine December 7, 2016 at 2:26 pm

Ahhh yes, the classic Princess Tiara is a very popular “hat” for many girls! My little boy’s favorite these days is his firechief hat, hands-down, but I think just the shape and look alone of the chefs hat would cause him to love that too, if he had it. Yes, good idea for Christmas… thanks! 🙂
      Thanks for dropping in, Lindsey!

    Marlaine,
My year 11 old son has had several of your dress up hats. I have a top hat that he wears on hat day at school, he thinks it makes him look like a rich man. The Police hat was one of his first, he won first place in a Halloween contest when he was in first grade. He still likes to play police with this hat.
Hats for kids is a great idea, as it will help shape their future if used properly. Dressing them up in a hat will give their imagination something to work with without spending a great amount of money.

Thanks John! I appreciate your taking the time to comment! I love the top hat idea – that it makes your son feel “rich”. There’s something so wonderful about how the simple act of putting a hat on your head can transform you so much! And yes, dress up hats are a pretty cheap addition to a dress up box. I love that aspect for sure! 🙂
      Have a great day!

    Hello Marlaine

Your website article with the children’s dress up hats makes me wish I was a kid again, before your article I did not realize you could even get this type of product. Sure did not have these cool hats when I was a kid or when my sons were boys, I am sure many parents will want to get some of these for their children to play dress up.

Shared you website with my social pages for others to see what you have for their children

    Take care

Yes, it’s amazing the variety of dress up hats you can find these days! And having a nice variety of them in a dress up box allows for lots of different imaginative play scenarios!

      Have a great day!
